Saudis reject Mecca holy water scare

JEDDAH, Saudi Arabia, - Saudi authorities have rejected claims that holy Zamzam water from a spring inside the Grand Mosque complex of Mecca is polluted and stressed there were no health risks.

The Presidency of the Two Holy Mosques Affairs said in a statement Saturday

it had no reports suggesting there was any issue with Zamzam water which was

safe for drinking.

A spokesman for the presidency, Ahmad al-Mansuri, told AFP daily samples

were being taken from the 31-metre (105-foot) deep well, and measures were

taken to ensure it was safe.

According to Islamic tradition, the spring has never gone dry for over

4,000 years and pilgrims treat the water as sacred and having miraculous

healing powers.

The British media had reported this week that the well was polluted and

that drinking from it could cause diseases such as cancer.

Meanwhile, the Saudi embassy in London issued a statement insisting Zamzam

water was "not polluted" and that analysis at European laboratories in March

confirmed it to be safe.

King Abdullah inaugurated in September a 700-million-riyal ($187 million)

factory capable of bottling 200,000 bottles a day in Mecca.

Worshippers at the Grand Mosque are able to drink Zamzam water from

hundreds of scattered taps. Saudi authorities have banned any commercial

exports of the water.

Muslims believe Zamzam came into being to provide Hagar, Abraham's wife

according to Islamic teachings, and her baby Ishmael with water in the hot, dry

valley of Mecca where God ordered Abraham to leave them.

In her desperate search for water for the baby, Hagar ran seven times

between the hillocks of Safa and Marwa until she saw water running between the

legs of her baby.

KUALA LUMPUR, 4 Mac (Bernama) -- Adakah mungkin untuk memulih atau mencergaskan semula seseorang dengan hanya meletakkan tangan atau mendekatkannya dengan tubuh seseorang?

Adakah ini benar? Bolehkah ini berlaku?

Ya, ini benar dan memang boleh berlaku. Pemindahan tenaga antara dua orang untuk tujuan menyembuh telah diamalkan sejak sekian lama dan amalan ini kini dikenali sebagai Reiki.

Hampir kesemua budaya di dunia ini percaya dalam bentuk pemulihan seperti ini tetapi dilakukan menggunakan kaedah yang sesuai dengan prinsip serta kepercayaan mereka.

Reiki berasal daripada perkataan Jepun 'Ray-ki'. Perkataan 'Ray' bermakna 'alam semesta' dan 'ki' pula bermakna `tenaga untuk hidup'. Ada juga yang mentakrifkan Reiki sebagai 'tenaga hidup' dan semakin diterima sebagai pelengkap dalam perubatan moden.

Reiki merawat keseluruhan tubuh, emosi, minda dan roh, dan membawa ketenangan jiwa, rasa relaks, selamat dan sejahtera. Ramai yang melaporkan hasil yang luar biasa.

Reiki adalah baru tetapi bukan asing di Malaysia. Sudahpun terdapat pengamal terkenal seperti Master Mohd Hisham Yahya dan Master Terry Ng.

BANYAK JENIS REIKI

Hari ini, terdapat pelbagai jenis teknik Reiki yang diamalkan selaras dengan kepercayaan pelbagai masyarakat. Antara teknik yang popular ialah Reiki Seichim, Reiki Gtummo, Reiki Sufism dan Reiki Kundalini.

Pengamal Reiki didorong oleh lima prinsip, yang dikenali sebagai 'Five Reiki Precepts'. Prinsip ini sebenarnya merupakan senarai nilai-nilai positif untuk diterapkan dalam rutin pengamal.

Kelima-lima prinsip ini menasihatkan kesemua pengamal supaya mengawal kemarahan, elakkan rasa resah, berpuas hati dengan apa yang mereka ada, berusaha gigih dan bersimpati dengan mereka yang lain.

Nilai-nilai ini menyumbang kepada 'seni hidup bahagia' dan 'ubat ajaib bagi semua jenis penyakit'.

KUNDALINI REIKI (KR)

Menurut Master Mohd Hisham Yahya, yang mengamalkan Reiki Kundalini yang diasaskan Master Ole Gabrielsen dari Denmark, ramai sebenarnya telah menggunakan tenaga spiritual tanpa menyedari mereka sebenarnya mengamalkan Reiki.

"Tenaga terdapat di sekeliling kita. Ia tidak boleh diwujud atau dimusnahkan. Tetapi ia boleh diubah dari satu bentuk ke bentuk lain," kata beliau.

Para pengamal perlu mematuhi etika Reiki. Paling penting, pesakit perlu disedarkan mengenai Reiki. Proses pemulihan hanya boleh berlaku dengan izin pesakit yang tahu akan cara rawatan ini.

Para pengamal juga tidak boleh menjanjikan sejauh mana seseorang itu boleh sembuh, dan hanya boleh menyentuh pesakit dengan kebenaran, elakkan daripada membuat diagnosis, dan akhir sekali menghormati rahsia pesakit mereka.

"Reiki adalah tenaga pintar, ia akan mengalir ke mana-mana bahagian badan yang memerlukannya tanpa panduan," tambah Hisham yang mengamalkan Reiki sejak enam tahun lepas.

SATU LAGI HARAPAN

Reiki ialah satu kaedah alternatif, bukan satu-satunya penawar bagi masalah manusia.

Reiki semakin mendapat perhatian perubatan moden. Di hospital dan klinik merentasi Amerika Syarikat, Reiki dilihat sebagai kaedah yang bermakna serta berkesan dari segi kos untuk menambah baik penjagaan pesakit.

Hospital-hospital utama seperti Portsmouth Regional Hospital di New Hampshire serta California Pacific Medical Center di Amerika Syarikat merupakan antara hospital dengan program Reiki yang mantap.

TERBUKTI SECARA PRAKTIK

Melaksanakan Reiki tidak memerlukan teknologi dan ini bermakna hospital yang terbabit tidak perlu melabur dalam mesin-mesin baru, latihan petugas serta penyenggaraan.

Ia juga baik dari segi kos kerana dalam kebanyakan kes, para pengamal Reiki menawarkan khidmat mereka secara percuma.

Sementara itu, satu kajian di Hartford Hospital di Connecticut, Amerika Syarikat yang dijalankan pada tahun 2000 membuktikan bahawa Reiki menambah baik tidur pesakit sebanyak 86 peratus dan mengurangkan kesakitan sebanyak 78 peratus.

Kajian yang sama juga mendapati kaedah rawatan ini boleh mengurangkan rasa mual sehingga 80 peratus dan mengurangkan sebanyak 94 peratus kerisauan semasa hamil.

BERBALOI UNTUK MENCUBA

Sejak kebelakangan ini, rakyat Malaysia juga dibebani kos penjagaan kesihatan yang semakin meningkat. Mereka juga lebih mudah jatuh sakit.

Reiki sememangnya kaedah yang mudah, selamat dan murah tidak kira usia, jantina atau lokasi.

Juga tiada konflik antara amalan keagamaan dan Reiki, oleh itu sesiapa sahaja boleh mengamalkan dengan bebas kaedah rawatan ini.

"Saya berharap setiap keluarga di Malaysia boleh amalkan Reiki sebagai usaha sendiri ke arah kebaikan".

"Ia juga membantu anda mengurangkan stres dan membolehkan anda relaks," tambah Hisham.

MB Denies Pahang Is Bankrupt

TEMERLOH, March 2 (Bernama) -- The Pahang government is not bankrupt as alleged by the opposition despite owing huge loans to the federal government, said Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Adnan Yaakob.

He said the situation was not worrying as the state's revenue and expenditures were evaluated in the interest of the people.

"We must understand that all these are for the people... we built low-cost houses, paid civil servant salaries.

"Some people may say that you manage to pay by asking the federal government (for the money). Is the federal government not our government? The federal government is our government," he told reporters after chairing the state executive council meeting here Wednesday.

He said so far the state government had taken loans totalling RM2.2 billion from the federal government.

On claims that his administration had failed to govern the state efficiently, he dismissed it as a slander as the opposition was bankrupt of ideas to be raised in the Kerdau state by-election's campaign.

He said since he became menteri besar in 1999, the state government had tabled deficit budgets only twice compared to six surplus budgets and three balanced budgets.

Asked whether the issue will affect Barisan Nasional's chances in the by-election, Adnan said the people would not be hoodwinked by such propaganda although he feared that it would mislead the people.

He said Kerdau residents were more interested in choosing a representative who could be tasked with the responsibility of looking after their well-being.

No Teams Will Miss Football Action Next Season

PETALING JAYA, Nov 26 (Bernama) -- No teams will be dropped from the Malaysian Football League next season for non-payment of Employees Provident Fund (EPF) subscription.

Football Association of Malaysia (FAM) vice-president Datuk Hamidin Mohd Amin said it was informed that all teams had settled arrears or were paying by installment.

"I am happy that the teams have given positive response to FAM's moves to address this problem," he told reporters after chairing FAM local competitions committee meeting here Friday.

The Malaysian Football League had grappled with non-payment of EPF subscription since its inception in 1994 with arrears reaching a high of RM5.4mil.

Hamidin said teams that paid by installment include Perlis which agreed to pay EPF RM20,000 monthly to settle arrears amounting RM500,000.

FAM threatened to drop teams that failed to settle payment to EPF, Inland Revenue Board (IRB) and Social Security Organisation (Socso) by Oct 30.

Football players plying the Malaysian League next season will also have insurance coverage.

PETALING JAYA, Nov 26 (Bernama) -- Do not dream of going to Putrajaya if the party has not made adequate preparations, a Keadilan Youth (AMK) delegate told the conference of the Keadilan Youth Movement, here Friday.

A Penang delegate, Syed Mikai Rizal Aidid said if the Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) leadership continued to dream of capturing Putrajaya without making any effort, they might as well forget it.

"If we continue to dream of going to Putrajaya, we should actually look at the capability of our party first. If we don't make sufficient preparation, we may as well forget Putrajaya. It's better for us to buy a bus ticket back to the kampung," he said.

He said this when debating the policy speech by Keadilan Youth head Shamsul Iskandar Mohd Akin at the Keadilan Youth conference at the 7th PKR Annual National Congress, here Friday.

At the same time, he also criticised the logo used by the party for the PKR Annual National Congress which he described as a 'hospital logo'.

"As we can see in the logo of our congress today, it looks like there is a shape of a heart, like we are concerned about our safety. The logo for the congress looks to me like a hospital logo.

"I don't want to criticise, but it looks like we are incapable of maintaining the identity of our own party. Even in doing the logo, it looks like we are sick," he said.

Meanwhile, a Melaka delegate, Law Bing Haw reminded the AMK leadership not to be arrogant after winning a party position.

He said there were even leaders who were prepared to sacrifice noble values during the election campaign for the Central Leadership Council (MPP) merely to secure a position.

"Remember that you are elected by the grassroots. The position is something that must be shouldered and not something to be proud of," he said.

A Johor delegate, Mohd Nazri Ismail suggested that AMK members were selected as PKR candidates in the next general election.

"In Johor, we have identified four areas, two Parliamentary seats and two State Legislative Assembly seats where AMK members can be fielded as election candidates," he said.

To kill a bedbug: pick your weapon

CHICAGO, Sept 22, 2010 (AFP) - Killing a single bedbug can be as easy as
rolling on top of it in your sleep. Ridding a home or hotel of its siblings and
cousins on the other hand, is an exhausting and expensive task.
     Nearly eliminated a few decades ago, bedbugs are back with a vengeance.
     They've overtaken college dorms, military barracks, apartment complexes,
office buildings and even forced the closure of Niketown's flagship New York
store Monday.
     And they are big business: 258 million dollars in the United States last
year, according to the National Pest Management Association.
     Leading experts gathered in a Chicago suburb Tuesday for a two-day summit
on eradicating the hardy critters, which can live a year without feeding and
like to explore at night, often catching rides to new homes in luggage,
handbags and clothing.
     "It's easy to come in and kill bedbugs with insecticide, but it's much
harder to get to the point where you can be confident that they're gone,"
Kenneth Haynes, an entomologist with the University of Kentucky, told AFP.
     Bedbugs are very good at hiding, he explained, and the problem is finding a
poison which is powerful enough to kill all the bugs and their eggs but safe
enough to be used indoors.
     The summit's showroom was filled with potential solutions: massive room
heaters to bake the bugs, carbon dioxide sprayers to freeze the bugs, high
powered steamers to boil the bugs, plastic moats and barriers to block the bugs
from getting into beds, tight-fitting mattress protectors, and even
specially-trained dogs to sniff out their hiding spots.
     "There's so much bedbug hysteria and 75 percent of it is well-founded,"
said David James, whose company Packtite sells portable heating chambers
designed to kill any critters that crawl into luggage or non-washable
possessions like books and shoes.
     "They're so bad out there and they're so hard to kill," James said as he
manned a busy display at the sold-out show.
     "I've had people call me and say they've gone bankrupt trying to get rid of
them because they keep replacing their clothes and furniture."
     There is unfortunately no silver bullet for eradicating bed bugs, said
Phillip Cooper, president of BedBug Central, a for-profit educational
organization which hosted the conference.
     "Nothing works on its own," said Cooper, who also runs a pest-control
company founded by his father in 1955.
     The best thing to do is try to keep bed bugs out of your home by carefully
inspecting hotel rooms, washing all clothes taken on a trip in hot water and
vacuuming or treating your luggage.
     If you end up picking up the critters at work, a movie theatre, church or
work, hope that you find them quick and call a professional right away.
     A moderate infestation can be eradicated with a single, properly-applied
treatment of insecticide, Cooper said. But serious infestations can require
several treatments and a multiprong approach costing thousands of dollars.
     One way large hotel and apartment complexes are cutting their costs is
hiring sniffer dogs to pinpoint exactly which units are affected and find the
nests.
     A property manager at a large apartment complex outside Chicago, Shellie
Beno, got into the business last year after residents started bringing her bags
filled with bedbugs.
     Pest controllers would spend hours tearing an apartment apart looking for
nests. Her three dogs can search a typical unit in about five to seven minutes.
And their noses can sniff out places people can't, like behind the walls.
     Another advantage is the dogs are much less intrusive and residents don't
have to worry that their neighbors will know they've got bugs.
     "Would you rather have me going through your dresser drawers or my dogs?"
said her Detective Bedbug partner David Bohannan. - AFP

mengatasi tekanan perasaan di kalangan suami isteri, kata seorang ahli seksologi

India yang terkenal.

Dr Narayana Reddy berkata slogan "penyembuhan seksual" di kalangan ahli

seksologi kini semakin digemari di kalangan suami isteri yang mendapatkan

bantuan profesional bagi mengatasi tekanan dan meningkatkan hubungan seksual

mereka.

Beliau berkata kekerapan aktiviti seks diangap ubat terbaik bagi

menyembuhkan pelbagai penyakit daripada gangguan jantung, arthritis kepada

kemurungan biasa, kerana keseluruhan tubuh badan akan kembali bertenaga selepas

persetubuhan.

Kekerapan seks, menurutnya, adalah tiga kali dalam 10 hari atau tiga kali

sebulan sudah mencukupi.

Tetapi beliau mengingatkan kegiatan hubungan suami isteri perlu juga bebas

dari sebarang tekanan.

"Seks adalah baik. Tetapi ia mesti hubungan seks yang sihat, ia juga perlu

bebas dari rasa bersalah. Bukan seks di luar ikatan perkahwinan atau mengunjungi

pekerja seks komersial," katanya kepada Bernama.

"Setiap hubungan seks membakar 200 kalori, yang bersamaan dengan 15 minit

menggunakan alat senaman atau setengah jam berjalan kaki di taman. Ini membantu

membebaskan endokrin yang membuatkan kita rasa ceria," kata Dr Narayana yang

Malaysian wildlife park under fire over Tiger video

     KUALA LUMPUR, May 23, 2010 (AFP) - A Malaysian wildlife park came under
fire Sunday from wildlife activists over a video posted on YouTube showing an
apparently drugged tiger being prodded and poked for the amusement of visitors.
     The two-minute clip (http://www.youtube.com/watch?vh5ACVn73YL0) shows the
tiger lying on a slab at a wildlife park in the Afamosa resort while a handler
invites visitors walking around it to take pictures with the animal.
     The handler then prods and pokes the big cat to force it to pose and even
uses his knee to jab its head into an upright pose for a photograph.
     "This is horrible and a disgrace that an animal is treated in this fashion.
We must stop such abuse and the perpetrators must be punished," Friends of the
Earth Malaysia president S.M. Idris told AFP.
     Wildlife trade watchdog TRAFFIC criticised the park's use of captive tigers
for entertainment.
     "If they acquire tigers for this use, it gives Malaysia a very bad
reputation as it shows the park is using the tigers for entertainment instead
of educational purposes," senior officer Kanitha Krishnasamy told AFP.
     Afamosa resort general manager Allan Chee denied the tiger was abused at
the park, which has more than 20 tigers and numerous other species.
     "There was no abuse to the tiger, the tiger was just drowsy and lazy after
being fed and so was being prodded by the handler to get into position," he
told AFP.
     He said the park in southern Malacca state prided itself on its animal
performances, with elephants playing football and others allowed to roam freely.
     However, state wildlife and national parks head Abdul Rahim Othman told AFP
the park had been warned over having such photo sessions with animals which can
be viewed as abuse.
     "We have warned them and will carry out further investigations and if they
continue to violate our warnings, we can take action against them including
pulling their licences," he said.
     Just 3,200 tigers are believed to remain in the wild, down from an
estimated 100,000 a century ago.

Najib Makes First Official Visit To Cambodia From May 9-11

KUALA LUMPUR, May 7 (Bernama) -- Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak will make an official three-day visit to Cambodia from Sunday, his first trip there since taking office in April last year.

Najib will be accompanied by his wife, Datin Seri Rosmah Mansor, and a 45-member delegation including businessmen and the media, said a Wisma Putra statement.

"The visit illustrates Malaysia's commitment to actively engage Cambodia in dialogues and discussions as a means to broaden and deepen the existing cooperation between both countries and pave ways to explore other potential areas for future cooperation," it added.

It would also provide an opportunity for Najib to exchange views and achieve closer understanding on issues of mutual interests with Cambodian leaders.

Najib is scheduled to have an audience with King Norodom Sihamoni at the Royal Palace in Phnom Penh and meet with his Cambodian counterpart, Hun Sen.

Najib will also address a business luncheon of the Malaysian-Cambodian Business Forum and have a meeting and dialogue with Malaysian investors and businessmen.

He is also expected to visit a Malaysian company in the Cambodian capital before returning to Malaysia on May 11.

KUALA LUMPUR, 16 April (Bernama) -- Bagai sirih pulang ke gagang.

Bekas Ketua Pengarang Bernama Datuk Abdul Rahman Sulaiman dilantik sebagai pengerusi baru Pertubuhan Bertia Nasional itu berkuatkuasa 1 Feb lepas.

Beliau menggantikan Datuk Seri Mohd Annuar Zaini yang tamat tempoh sebagai pengerusi kesembilan pada 31 Jan lepas, demikian diumumkan oleh pengurusan Bernama pada Jumaat.

Pelantikan Abdul Rahman, 64, diperkenankan oleh Yang di-Pertuan Agong Sultan Mizan Zainal Abidin bagi mengetuai 13 anggota Lembaga Pengelola Bernama.

Beliau mengetuai Jabatan Pengarang Bernama dari tahun 1989 hingga 1995. Jawatan terakhir yang disandangnya dalam kerajaan kerajaan ialah sebagai Pengarah Komunikasi Unit Perancang Ekonomi di Jabatan Perdana Menteri dari Ogos 2001 hingga Mac 2010.

Beliau juga merupakan Pengarah Komunikasi Pejabat Perdana Menteri dari Mac 2009 sehingga baru-baru ini.

Abdul Rahman berkahwin dengan Datin Maznah Adam dan mempunyai dua anak lelaki dan seorang perempuan.

Beliau dianugerahkan Darjah Kebesaran Panglima Jasa Negara yang membawa gelaran Datuk pada tahun 2007.

Dilahirkan pada 26 Mei 1946 di Parit Buntar, Perak, Abdul Rahman mendapat pendidikan awal di Sekolah Umum Parit Tok Ngah dan Methodist Secondary School di Parit Buntar.

Beliau menyertai Bernama pada 1971 sebagai wartawan kanan setelah memulakan kerjaya kewartawanan di Radio Televisyen Malaysia (RTM) sebagai wartawan penyiar pada 1966.

Pada tahun 1973 beliau melanjutkan pelajaran ke Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) dan memperoleh ijazah Sarjana Muda dengan kepujian dalam bidang komunikasi pada 1976, dan sekembalinya bertugas beliau dihantar ke Bangkok sebagai koresponden Bernama bagi Thailand dan Indo-China hingga 1978.

Beliau juga memegang pelbagai jawatan di agensi berita itu termasuk Ketua Biro Johor, dan Editor Eksekutif Perkhidmatan Berita Am sebelum dilantik sebagai Ketua Pengarang pada 1989.

Pada 1995, beliau mengambil persaraan awal bagi bertanding pada pilihan raya umum di kawasan Parlimen Parit Buntar sebagai calon Barisan Nasional dan menewaskan Idris Abdul Rauf daripada Parti Semangat 46.

Another Tsunami Buoy Deployed In The Sulawesi Sea

PENANG, March 1 (Bernama) -- The government will deploy another tsunami buoy, in the Sulawesi Sea, Science, Technology and Innovation Minister Datuk Seri Dr Maximus Johnity Ongkili said Monday.

He said the buoy, costing RM1 million, would be deployed in waters off Semporna and Sipadan in Sabah to receive tsunami warning signals from the Pacific Ocean.

"Installation of the buoy is expected to be completed in three months," he told reporters after opening a new office building for the Penang Chemistry Department here Monday.

Malaysia has installed three tsunami buoys - in the Andaman Sea near Rondo Island in Indonesia, in the Layang-Layang atoll in the South China Sea and in the Sulu Sea.

Ongkili also said that the government had withdrawn yesterday afternoon a tsunami advisory issued earlier in the day following the 8.8-magnitude earthquake in Chile.

In another development, he said the Chemistry Department had played its role as a professional and independent department in forensic research.

Although the government allowed the people to engage foreign experts in forensic cases, this was to get a second opinion, he added.

Muhyiddin Condemns Mosque Incidents

CEBU, Jan 27 (Bernama) -- Deputy Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin has expressed anger over the dumping of severed heads of wild boars at two mosques in Petaling Jaya on Wednesday, saying he condemned the incidents in the strongest terms.

He described the act as irrational and going against the norms.

"This should not have happened. This is embarrassing," he told reporters after attending the plenary session of the 45th Southeast Asian Ministers of Education Organisation (Seameo) conference here Wednesday.

Saying that the incidents could stoke anger among Muslims, Muhyiddin said police should take immediate action against the culprits.

He reminded the people, however, to remain calm and not resort to accusing anyone of masterminding the incidents.

"I don't want to accuse anyone of perpetrating the incidents; like the surau-burning case in Muar, it turned out that those involved are not non-Muslims. So we don't want to make any accusation.

"But stern action should be taken against the perpetrators irrespective of whether they are Muslims or non-Muslims. We cannot compromise on those who are out to undermine public safety, peace and harmony in our country, more so if it is due to religion," he said.

Muhyiddin said he viewed the matter seriously, but said he did not want the incidents to aggravate anger among Muslims to the extent of undermining the country's peace.

In the incident Wednesday morning, residents who went to perform the subuh prayers stumbled on two sacks containing the heads at the rear door of Jumhuriyah Mosque in Taman Datuk Haron.

A bucket containing RM30 in RM1 denomination was found near the sacks.

Two kilometres away, in the compound of Al Imam Al Tirmizi Mosque at Taman Sri Sentosa, congregators found the other two sacks containing the heads.

A bucket containing a similar amount of money was also found.

PM Repeats Directive On Time Frame Act On People's Application

KUALA LUMPUR, Jan 27 (Bernama) -- Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak has again instructed all government agencies and departments to update the time frame for action and approvals for applications and appeals made by members of the public.

Information Communication and Culture Minister Datuk Seri Dr Rais Yatim said Najib had repeated the directive when chairing the cabinet meeting Wednesday.

"The fact that the matter was again mentioned shows that the Prime Minister wants his administration to take stern and swift action in tackling the needs of the public," he said at a media conference here.

According to Rais, Najib wanted all government departments that had dealings with the public to process all applications within a short time frame as this would give a positive impact to both the local residents and foreigners.

"He (Najib) had cited an example where the international passport, which was approved within one month previously, is now ready within a few hours," he said.

Najib had recently directed all government departments and agencies to settle the people's requests whether through correspondence or the approval of a particular application within the shortest time possible to ensure that the 1Malaysia concept of 'People First, Performance Now' was achieved.

KUALA TERENGGANU, 7 Jan (Bernama) -- Kerajaan Terengganu akan mengagihkan 800 unit e-Book kepada semua guru yang mengajar murid Tahun Enam di negeri ini sebagai persediaan menghadapi peperiksaan Ujian Pencapaian Sekolah Rendah (UPSR) tahun ini.

Menteri Besar Datuk Ahmad Said berkata sebelum itu, guru berkenaan akan terlebih dahulu menjalani tiga siri kursus yang dikendalikan syarikat komputer Intel dengan kerjasama kerajaan negeri.

"Kita tidak mahu murid-murid menggunakan komputer manakala guru masih menggunakan buku biasa," katanya kepada pemberita selepas menyampaikan sijil kecemerlangan pelajar UPSR Terengganu 2009 di sini Khamis.

Pada peperiksaan UPSR lepas, 3,664 murid di Terengganu memperoleh 5A sekaligus menjulang Terengganu sebagai negeri yang berjaya mengungguli peperiksaan itu selama sembilan tahun berturut-turut.

Ahmad berkata kerajaan negeri juga akan menampung kos bagi memasang peralatan komputer dengan kerjasama Intel untuk membolehkan guru mengawal komputer murid di dalam kelas.

Beliau berkata dengan kemudahan itu, semua murid Tahun Enam akan menjalani peperiksaan bulanan secara on-line bermula Jun ini, dan murid yang mendapat tempat pertama hingga ke 10 setiap bulan di setiap sekolah akan diberi hadiah wang tunai.

Hishammuddin: No Prohibition On People Expressing Views On "Allah" Issue But ...

PUTRAJAYA, Jan 6 (Bernama) -- Home Minister Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Tun Hussein said on Wednesday the government does not prohibit the people from expressing their views on the issue over the use of the word "Allah" by the Catholic weekly magazine Herald, but on condition that their actions do not undermine national security.

"I will take action if it affects security," he told reporters after chairing a post-Cabinet meeting at his ministry, here.

He said the ministry would monitor Internet blogsites on the matter and would act if national security was threatened.

"It is our duty to ensure that their actions do not undermine security, and to take action before anything untoward happens," he said.

Hishammuddin was responding to reporters' questions on plans by several organisations to stage a demonstration on Friday to protest against the use of the word "Allah" by other religions.

The minister advised all quarters to remain calm and let the court process take its course.

He said the Cabinet, at its weekly meeting today, also discussed the issue and decided to leave the matter to the courts, and to explain the matter to the people if there was any confusion.

The Kuala Lumpur High Court today granted the Home Ministry a stay of execution on the Dec 31 High Court ruling allowing the Herald to use the word "Allah" in its Malay-language edition, pending the hearing of an appeal.

Najib: Announcement On New Economic Model By End February 2010

PUTRAJAYA, Dec 22 (Bernama) -- The country's new economic model is expected to be announced by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak at the end of February next year.

He said the new economic model will form the basis and direction of the country's economy in the future.

"It is a comprehensive model as it does not only cover the economy but encompasses all aspects of a nation's role.

"I will table it in February next year after it gets the approval of the cabinet ministers," Najib said during the Media Night organised by the Finance Ministry here.

Najib said he was given a briefing today by the members of the Economic Advisory Council on the framework of the new economic model.

"I have given my agreement in principle for the new economic model. I also wish to inform that the text will be prepared after this and it is expected to take a month to be ready.

"Once ready, it will be presented to the cabinet ministers for approval and subsequently according to plans, the country's new economic model will be announced at the end of February," he said.

Najib who is also Finance Minister said the 2010 Budget, government transformation programme and the new economic model will be the government's priorities in driving the country's economic agenda towards a more better, assured and a dynamic future.

Also present at the event were the Prime Minister's wife, Datin Seri Rosmah Mansor, Second Finance Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Husni Hanadzlah and Treasury Secretary General Tan Sri Dr Wan Abdul Aziz Wan Abdullah.

Singapore And EU Agree To Negotiate For FTA

SINGAPORE, Dec 22 (Bernama) -- Singapore and the European Union (EU) have agreed to start negotiations for a free trade agreement (FTA).

The city-state's Trade and Industry Ministry said Tuesday this represented a milestone in Singapore's relationship with the EU, with whom it had robust and long-standing economic ties.

An FTA with the EU will be a key addition to Singapore's network of FTAs as the EU is Singapore's largest trading partner.

Between January and last month, Singapore's total trade with the EU stood at S$78.6 billion, accounting for 11.6 per cent of the island republic's total trade.

The EU is also Singapore's largest investor. In 2007, the EU invested S$150.8 billion in the city-state.

In 2008, Singapore was the EU's 15th largest trading partner globally, and EU-Singapore trade accounted for a third of EU-Asean trade, making the republic EU's largest trading partner among Asean member states.

Exercise Begins To Identify Unregistered Voters Among UMNO Members

SANDAKAN, Dec 20 (Bernama) -- Umno is to undertake an exercise over the next four months to identify who among its 3.4 million members have yet to register as voters.

Umno vice-president Datuk Seri Mohd Shafie Apdal said the records indicated that 661,231 Umno members had yet to register as voters and that Sabah had the highest number among the states, of 129,925 such members.

The exercise would determine the status of these Umno members, whether they were still alive, active or had left the party, he told reporters after launching an anti-drug sports programme for youths and a membership drive of the Batu Sapi Umno, here on Sunday.

"I have tabled the exercise implementation programme to the party's supreme council in a move to raise the number of Umno members registered as voters.

"The exercise is one of the important approaches on updating to face the next general election," he said.

Mohd Shafie, who is chairman of the Umno Membership Committee, said a list of Umno members who had yet to register as voters had been sent to all the divisions.

He also said that a special committee had been set up to undertake the identification exercise through participation of members in programmes such as carnivals.

"The exercise will take up to four months and then I will get the feedback from the divisions on the actual number of Umno members who have yet to register as voters," he said.

Terengganu Police Launch Website

KUALA TERENGGANU, Dec 20 (Bernama) -- The Terengganu police have launched their website, www.polistrg.gov.my. in an effort to make the police more people-friendly.

State police chief Datuk Mohd Shukri Dahlan said crime related information and services would be posted on the website.

The public could lodge complaints and relay information to the police through the website, he told reporters after attending the presentation of outstanding awards to 246 police personnel and civil servants here on Sunday.

He said the website could enhance cooperation between the police and the public.

Mohd Shukri said the state police targeted to reduce crimes by 50 per cent within five years at the rate of 10 per cent yearly while crime prevention campaigns would focus on youths and students.

He said the police would hold a monthly entertainment programme at Dataran Batu Buruk besides exhibitions to get closer to the people.

Noble Invites Malaysians To Invest In Ghana Gold Project

KUALA LUMPUR, Dec 14 (Bernama) -- Australia- based mineral exploration company Noble Mineral Resources Ltd is inviting institutional investors in Malaysia and other Asian countries to participate in its Bibiani gold investment project in Ghana.

Noble is set to be a major gold producer after it recently won a tender to acquire Central African Gold Ghana Limited (CAGGL) from Investec Bank Ltd.

Noble's chairman Tunku Naquiyuddin Tuanku Ja'afar said investors could participate in the project via private placement of A$60 million, representing an opportunity to subscribe up to 45 per cent equity shares in Noble or up to 150 million shares.

"There is clearly a serious opportunity for Malaysian institutions to get involved through this private placement option," Tunku Naquiyuddin said at a press conference here Monday.

He said currently, there were ongoing talks with a number of major groups in Malaysia which have expressed interest to participate in the investment opportunity.

Noble, he added, already has a significant Malaysian interest through Global Gold Holdings Ltd, which is the largest corporate shareholder in Noble.

Tunku Naquiyuddin has a stake in Noble through Global Gold Holdings.

Noble's managing director Wayne D. Norris said CAGGL has the gold mine concession at a well-known site called Bibiani in Ghana which is estimated to have current gold resources of 1.624 million ounces, worth US$1.86 billion at the current market price of US$1,150 per ounce.

"CAGGL has a processing plant which can process up to 2.7 million tonnes a year and a significant mining fleet in good working order," Norris said at a media briefing here.

The acquisition of CAGGL includes a mining concession and prospecting licence measuring 100 square kilometres with mine workshops, accommodation, hospital, school and a working fleet of mine vehicles.

Noble's finance director Alan Taylor said the A$60 million raised from the private placement would be utilised for working capital and to upgrade the mine infrastructure.

"Noble will be taking over the debts of CAGGL and is currently negotiating with existing creditors. Noble has taken over the management of the mine and processing plant in Bibiani, Ghana," he said at the media briefing.

According to Noble's company secretary Anthony Ho, there is great potential in terms of the investment in the Bibiani gold investment project.

"Based on the current price of gold of US$1,100 per ounce and cost per ounce of between US$450 to US$550, there is a significant gap in terms of the profit margin," he said.

The company also said that there is potential for more upside in terms of the gold price as major gold producing sites in South Africa are producing less gold and with the continuing instability in world financial markets.

In addition, there is expectation that demand from central banks, including those in India and China, will increase in the coming years as they shift more of their reserves to gold from other asset classes which are mainly denominated in US dollar, it added.

90 Per Cent Of Flu Cases H1N1 Positive

BEIJING, Dec 11 (Bernama) -- The H1N1 Flu pandemic remains severe and widespread in China, with 90 per cent of flu cases reported over the past two weeks confirmed as H1N1 positive, the Chinese Ministry of Health said on Friday.

The ministry's emergency response office director, Liang Wannian, said medical experts predicted the pandemic would worsen in the next two months.

He said, this would especially be after the Spring Festival where mass movement of the population across the nation would make prevention and control of the disease more difficult.

At a press conference today, Liang urged local health authorities to expedite the vaccination processs as it was the most effective way to prevent the flu.

As of yesterday, the state food and drug administration has distributed 65.78 million doses of H1N1 Flu vaccines.

However, only 33.23 million people have been vaccinated so far.

Liang wants the vaccination process to cover 1.5 million people daily, to cope with the pandemic in the coming months.

Najib: Budget 2010 Stepping Stone Towards A High-income Economy

KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 23 (Bernama) -- Datuk Seri Mohd Najib Tun Razak on Friday tabled the 2010 Budget totalling RM191.5 billion and which has a three-pronged strategy to drive the nation towards a high-income economy; ensuring holistic and sustainable development; and focusing on the well-being of the people.

Najib, in tabling his maiden budget as the prime minister with the theme '1Malaysia, Together We Prosper', allocated RM138.3 billion or 72.2 per cent for operating expenditure and RM53.2 billion or 27.8 per cent for development expenditure.

The expenditure allocation for the 2010 Budget is 11.2 per cent less compared to the 2009 Budget allocation of RM215.7 billion, he said when tabling the 2010 Budget in the Dewan Rakyat this evening.

Najib said that to drive the country towards a high-income economy, the government would encourage increased private investment, provide a buisness-friendly environment and implement privatisation initiatives.

The government will also enhance implementation of public-private partnership initiatives; intensify foreign direct investment; intensify research, development and commercialisation; and fully leverage niche-areas.

To fully leverage the niche areas the government will boost the tourism industry; strengthen the information and communication technology industry; and intensify the halal industry.

Also under this strategy towards a high-income economy, Najib said the government will advance the agriculture sector; promote the construction industry; strengthen small and medium industries; develop green technology and promote construction of green buildings; and promote the creative industry.

The prime minster said to achieve the second strategy which was to ensure holistic and sustainable development, highly skilled human capital will be enhanced while access to quality and affordable education will be expanded.

Najib said the government will safeguard the welfare of students, enhance skills of the workforce, expand the Permata programme and strengthen public institutions of higher education.

This strategy will also strengthen the banking and financial system by invigorating the stock market; further develop the Islamic finance system and Ar-Rahnu micro credit programme; and combat corruption.

Najib further said the government will also stress on the development of the regional corridors, Putrajaya and Cyberjaya.

Najib said under the operating expenditure, RM42.2 billion is allocated for emoluments and RM20.8 billion for supplies and services, RM73.9 billion was for fixed charges and grants while RM524 million was provided for purchase of assets and the remaining RM800 million for other expenditures.

As for development expenditure, a sum of RM25.4 billion is provided for the economic sector to support the needs of infrastructure, industry and agriculture as well as rural development.

The prime minister said RM20.3 billion is allocated to the social sector encompassing education and training, health, welfare, housing and community development, RM3.7 billion is for the development of the security sector, RM1.8 billion for general administration and RM2 billion for contingencies.

Najib said federal government revenue in 2010 is expected to reduce 8.4 per cent to RM148.4 billion compared with RM162.1 billion in 2009.

However, he said the federal government deficit in 2010 is expected to be in a better position at 5.6 per cent of GDP compared with 7.4 per cent in 2009.

Najib said although the 2010 Budget is the last budget for the Ninth Malaysia Plan (PMP) it is the essential foundation for the development of the new economic model and a precursor to the 10th Malaysia Plan (10MP).

He said since assumning leadershiip of the government he had taken steps to stimulate the economy for the well-being of the people.

Referring to the 1Malaysia concept, People First, Performance Now he said it is based on positive values centred on social justice and acceptance of a multiracial society.

"This means the needs of the people and the people must always take precedence. Therefore, every step requires sacrifice and strong cooperation from every segment of society," he said.

The prime minister said in advancing towards a high-income economy, the government will take a new approah based on innovation, creativity and high-valued activities.

"These measures will more than double per capita income of the people in the next 10 years," he said.

At the end of his speech that took more than two hours, Najib urged everyone to come together with one voice, one hope and one aspiration for the beloved country.

"Our recent success in Bagan Pinang has sparked our zeal to embark on this journey of transformation to lift our beloved nation to greater heights," he said referring to Barisan Nasional's big win in the Bagan Pinang by-election recently.

"Indeed, this budget touches the heart and soul of all Malaysians. Indeed, this is an earnest and sincere contribution from the government to the people.

"Let us strengthen our resolve, set our goals and uphold the 1Malaysia concept. United, we can realise the impossible. 1Malaysia, Together We Prosper," Najib said, ending his speech to thuderous applause from government supporters in the Dewan Rakyat.

Susilo To Visit Malaysia First To Demonstrate Closeness In Ties, Says Najib

JAKARTA, Oct 20 (Bernama) -- Malaysian Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak said Indonesian President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono had decided, right on the day he was inaugurated as the head of state for a second term Tuesday, to make Malaysia the first country he would visit in his second term.

He said Susilo informed him of this intention to demonstrate, beyond any doubt, the closeness in the relations between the governments of Malaysia and Indonesia.

Najib said he himself decided to attend the inauguration of the Indonesian president here Tuesday, also to demonstrate the closeness in the bilateral relations.

"Besides expressing his thanks, he also informed me that as a gesture of the closeness of bilateral relations, he had decided to make Malaysia the first country he would visit as the president in the second term. The date of the visit is Nov 11," he said.

Najib, who was accompanied by his wife Datin Seri Rosmah Mansor and Foreign Minister Datuk Anifah Aman, arrived here last night to attend the inauguration of Susilo as the president and Boediono as the vice-president here Tuesday.

Najib said that he had no opportunity in Tuesday's schedule to discuss bilateral or multi-lateral issues with Susilo and only exchanged pleasantries.

"I think of more importance is the symbolism of the closeness of our bilateral relations," he told Malaysian journalists. Anifah was also present at the news conference.

Replying to a question, Najib said he did not regard Malaysian-Indonesian relations as going through ups and downs as the ties were always consistent and close.

"I do not regard them as ups and downs. In fact, all the while we strive to find ways to strengthen the relations and resolve problems which arise," he said.

Najib said the problem was in people-to-people relations, caused by a small group of people whose actions received wide publicity in the media.

"This is what gives the perception that we are moving towards tense relations, but the fact is the leadership of both countries always enjoy cordial relations," he said.

He also said that the cordial bilateral relations were also confirmed in the ties between the foreign ministers of both countries.

Najib is scheduled to return to Kuala Lumpur tonight.

PASIR MAS, 20 Okt (Bernama) -- Warga Sekolah Kebangsaan Tok Sangkut di sini, gempar apabila 35 helai sejadah di dalam surau didakwa berdiri secara misteri dengan sebahagiannya menyerupai individu sedang menunaikan solat.

Kejadian itu disedari seorang murid yang kemudiannya memaklumkan kepada gurunya, Adnan Abdullah, 37, ketika sesi pembelajaran dijalankan berhampiran surau berkenaan.

"Kejadian berlaku pukul 10.40 pagi, ketika saya menjalankan sesi pembelajaran di luar kelas disebabkan kelas sedang diubahsuai, seorang murid yang terpandang ke arah surau memberitahu sejadah kelihatan berdiri," katanya kepada pemberita di sini, Selasa. Adnan berkata beliau kemudiannya membuka pintu surau dan amat terkejut melihat sebanyak 35 helai sejadah dalam keadaan berdiri iaitu 16 helai di bahagian lelaki dan 19 lagi di bahagian perempuan. "Lebih aneh lagi apabila satu helai lagi berada di bahagian hadapan sekali iaitu di tempat imam dalam keadaan yang sama menunjukkan seolah-seolah sedang melakukan solat secara berjemaah," katanya yang telah mengajar di sekolah berkenaan sejak tujuh tahun lalu.

Menurut Adnan, beliau percaya kejadian itu membuktikan keagungan Allah yang mahu umatnya bermuhasabah diri.

"Bagaimanapun ia terpulang kepada tafsiran individu, bagi saya tak mungkin perkara ini dilakukan oleh manusia kerana tempoh semua sejadah dalam keadaan demikian lama," katanya.

Beliau berkata pada bulan Ramadhan yang lepas perkara yang sama turut berlaku di rumah penduduk kampung berkenaan apabila sehelai sejadahnya turut berdiri sendiri.

Manakala bagi Pembantu Penguasa pejabat Agama Pasir Mas, Kamarudin Zakaria yang ditemui di situ berkata beliau tidak menolak kemungkinan perkara itu dilakukan oleh individu yang tidak bertanggungjawab untuk menggemparkan penduduk setempat.

"Ia terpulang kepada tafsiran setiap individu untuk menganggap ia perkara ajaib atau sebagainya, tetapi bagi saya perkara-perkara sebegini boleh memesongkan akidah seseorang," katanya.

Kamarudin berkata pihaknya akan memaklumkan perkara berkenaan kepada Jabatan Agama dan jika sejadah masih dalam keadaan demikian sehingga esok, pihaknya akan mengambil tindakan yang perlu. Sementara itu, kawasan sekolah berkenaan sesak dengan orang ramai yang ingin melihat kejadian itu dari dekat.

On the internal squabbles in several Barisan Nasional (BN) component parties, he said, "All is well... except for minor internal problems, they must be resolved quickly."

Deputy Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin said the Deepavali celebration could enhance cooperation, unity and appreciation of each other culture.

"We hope it could instil the 1Malaysia concept with all races joining the celebration in the spirit of unity," he added.

Umno vice-president Datuk Seri Shafie Apdal said he hoped the celebration would not only bring joy to the Indian community but would also spur the resolve of all races to enhance racial unity.

MCA Deputy President Datuk Seri Liow Tiong Lai said he hoped the Deepavali celebration would strengthen unity among various races in confronting the challenges ahead.

"The 1Malaysia the spirit is widely accepted by the society and we believe it will be a catalyst in forging unity.

"Racial unity should not considered as trivial and it must be instilled during festivals," he said, adding that unity was important to ensure stability and progress in the face of global challenges.

MIC President Datuk Seri S. Samy Vellu said the presence of all races at the MIC's Deepavali open house showed that racial unity was alive and well in the country.

"The spirit of unity must be fostered at all times and festivals can be conduits to enhance unity.

"The spirit of unity was nurtured by leaders before us. We can see all races here... We want the tradition to continue for the next 100... 200... 300 years. "As politicians, we must unite and when we dabble on any issue, we must place unity uppermost in our minds," he added.

World Muslim Population Is 1.57 Billion: Study

WASHINGTON, Oct 8 (Bernama) -- Muslim population across the globe stands at 1.57 billion which means nearly one in four people in the world practice Islam, according to a study by the Pew Forum on Religion and Public Life said, the Press Trust of India (PTI) reported Thursday.

The study also revealed that India has the third-largest of the Islam community.

The study, which covered more than 200 countries found that there are 1.57 billion Muslims of all ages living in the world today, representing 23 per cent of an estimated 2009 world population of 6.8 billion.

"While Muslims are found on all five inhabited continents, more than 60 per cent of the global Muslim population is in Asia and about 20 per cent is in the Middle East and North Africa," the study said.

However, the Middle East-North Africa region has the highest percentage of Muslim-majority countries.

No Reports On Poisoning Caused By Exposure To Formaldehyde In Furniture

KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 8 (Bernama) -- The Health Ministry has not received any report on poisoning caused by exposure to formaldehyde and metal in children furniture or clothing.

Director of Disease Control Division Datuk Dr Hasan Abdul Rahman said in a statement today, Australia which conducted a study also did not find that exposure to formaldehyde had caused poisoning on children.

"The poisoning caused by exposure to formaldehyde in furniture was only reported in United States," he said when commenting a report in The Star newspaper on May 29.

Dr Hasan said the report with the title "Products for kids deemed unsafe" stated that exposure to formaldehyde and metal in furniture and children's clothing caused poisoning.

The Domestic Trade, Cooperative and Consumerism Ministry had gazetted the Consumer Protection Regulations (Toy Safety Standard) 2009 which would be effective on Jan 30.

"With the ruling, all toys for children under 14 years-old have to meet the safety standard," he said.

Formaldehyde is a chemical used in the manufacture of furniture, clothing, paper and fertilisers. It is also used in stickers, germicides, and as a preservative.

Exposure to formaldehyde over a long period can cause allergies and asthma in children or cause nose or lung cancer in adults.

No H1N1 Deaths In Three Weeks

KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 8 (Bernama) -- No influenza A (H1N1) deaths have been reported for three weeks running, Director-General of Health Tan Sri Dr Mohd Ismail Merican said.

He said 228 patients with Influenza Like Illness (ILI) were admitted to hospital for treatment while 183 others were discharged Thursday.

The ILI patients under treatment nationwide stood at 814 with 34 confirmed H1N1 cases.

"Eleven patients are being treated at the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) while two were discharged today. The death casualty remains at 77," he said in a statement today.

On dengue fever, Dr Ismail said the cases rose from 247 to 585 from Sept 27-Oct 3 with big increases recorded in five states - Sarawak, Selangor, Kuala Lumpur, Putrajaya, Johor and Terengganu.

No deaths were reported.

There were 32,008 cases registered compared to 34,522 cases over the corresponding period last year. The death casualty so far stood at 71, lower than the 75 recorded for the whole of last year.

"Of the 585 dengue cases reported last week, nine were in hot areas. It is disappointing that 47 percent of the localities has high aedes breeding rate."

On Chikungunya cases, Dr Ismail said there were 47 cases reported this week compared to 26 cases last week. No deaths were reported.

Sarawak recorded a big jump, contributing 42 of the cases nationwide last week. No deaths were reported.

Hailstorm Raining Ice Chunks Not An Ordinary Phenomenon In Malaysia -DOE

KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 2 (Bernama) -- The hailstorm raining ice chunks the size of cups in Jerantut, Pahang on Monday is not an ordinary phenomenon for an equatorial country.

Department of Environment (DOE) meteorological officer Zureen Norhaizatul Che Hassan said the hot and wet climate of Malaysia which lies in the equatorial grid does not allow the formation of ice chunks in the atmosphere.

"We have to study the ice chunks before making any assumption. It is important for us to go back to the dynamics of physics by looking at the physics of clouds," she told Bernama here , Friday.

Villagers in Jerantut received a rude shock on Monday when chunks of ice, some said to be as big as cups rained on them, destroying roofs, trees and electricity poles.

Zureen described the incident at 7pm as shocking although Malaysia had experienced hailstorm raining ice the size of 50 sen coins.

She said normally, the ice was not bigger than a 5 sen coin adding as hailstorm was a normal phenomenon in countries with snow.

"I used to come across such ice when young but it was nothing like those which fell in Jerantut. It was too small and melted before I could put it in my mouth," she said.

Asked whether the climate and temperature had caused the formation of ice, Zureen said it was difficult to say as rainfall over the past 30 years had been in the same range of 2,000-5,000mm annually.

"Rainfall and temperature readings always fluctuate. Factors like the Monsoon change and the hot and cold La Nina and El Nino winds can also cause this but it can't be used as a yardstick for climate change in the country.

"Ice chunks usually occur in countries with temperatures of below 0 degree Celsius and not possible for an equatorial country like Malaysia," she said.

Meanwhile, the Pahang Meteorological Department said the incident was linked to typhoon Ketsana which lashed the Philippines was now entering the Vietnam coastline.

"The typhoon clashed with the Cumulonimbus clouds bearing a thunderstorm at 6,000-9,000 metres from ground level turning water into ice," he said.

Tourism M'sia Wants To Draw More Tourists From Brazil

LANGKAWI, Sept 27 (Bernama) -- Tourism Malaysia hopes to increase the number of Brazilian tourists to this country by seven to eight per cent from the 3,000 who came last year.

The agency's vice-president for Western USA and Latin America, Mazlan Araju, said the targeted increase also took into consideration the current global economic downturn and Influenza A(H1N1) pandemic.

"Tourism promotional efforts need to be stepped up, focusing on Malaysian culture, arts, food and shopping areas to make our country an attractive tourist destination," he added.

Mazlan was speaking to reporters when attending a Mega Familiarisation programme for a group of tour agents and media representatives from Brazil where they took part in weaving ketupat cases and preparing Raya delicacies like lemang, rendang and dodol at Kampung Wang Tok Rendong in Kuah, here, on Sunday.

Tourism Malaysia had simultaneously launched the Mega Familiarisation programme in conjunction with this year's Aidilfitri at six village homestay sites nationwide, involving more than 100 foreign tourists including media representatives and tour operators from 13 countries.

The homestay facilities involved are in Kampung Walai Tokou (Sabah), Kampung Santubong (Sarawak), Sungai Pasu (Pahang), Kampung Pachitan (Negeri Sembilan), Kampung Seterpa (Kelantan) and Kampung Wang Tok Rendong (Kedah).

Mazlan said he was working out an arrangement with the Malaysian embassies in the Latin American countries to promote Malaysia to the people in these countries.

He said Tourism Malaysia had also carried out promotional efforts when it participated in the Brazilian Association of Travel Agents Congress (ABAV) in Rio de Janeiro in October last year.

"The Brazilians find the Malaysian way of life, culture and traditions unique and interesting," he said, adding that this should be capitalised on with the right approach.

On the homestay programme in conjunction with Aidilfitri, Mazlan said it was to enable the participants to experience the celebration and village life such as tapping rubber and making handicrafts, learn the local culture and savour the food.

The tourists involved in the programme also come from the United States, Australia, Germany, the Netherlands, Singapore, Korea, China, Taiwan and Vietnam.

Actress' Son Falls To His Death While Pursuing A Thief

KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 27 (Bernama) -- An actress' son fell to his death while pursuing a thief, who had broken into the Murni Titiwangsa Apartment, Keramat here at noon on Sunday.

Edi Rizal Ramli, 33, a son of actress Norlia Ghani, was said to have slipped and fell to the ground while trying to reach for the balcony of an apartment on the seventh floor.

His brother, Romiza, 36, said the incident happened when Edi Rizal went after a thief, who was said to have entered the unit by scaling a pipe.

"Edi earlier rushed to the seventh floor after being told that a thief hid in an apartment unit there after breaking into a unit on the eight floor.

"After trying unsuccessfully to enter the unit through the front door, Edi scaled the pipe to the seventh floor.

"He tried to grab a metal bar of the balcony but slipped and fell to the ground," Romiza told reporters at the Kuala Lumpur Hospital (HKL) Forensic Department here today.

Edi Rizal, who suffered serious head injuries, was rushed to the HKL by neighbours and was pronounced death on arrival.

His eldest brother, Rusdi, 39, who is also an actor, said Edi Rizal, who was single, would be buried at the Datuk Keramat Muslim Cemetery after a post-mortem.

"I was at home when I got a call from my youngest sibling (Emi Atkashira, 26), telling me that Edi had fallen from the apartment.

"As I was getting ready to go to mummy's (Norlia) place, I received another call from her, telling me to go to the HKL as Edi had died," said Rusdi.

Norlia's family stayed on the fourth floor of the apartment.

Kuala Lumpur deputy CID chief ACP Khairi Ahrasa, when contacted, said the police classified the case as sudden death.

RM168 Million Start-Up Capital For 1Malaysia, Annual Budget Estimated At RM308 Million

KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 25 (Bernama) -- 1Malaysia F1 Team will have a start-up capital of RM168 million while the team's baseline annual budget is estimated at RM308 million.

In a statement, the team said Proton Holdings Bhd will licence its Lotus brand to the 1Malaysia F1 Team (1MF1T).

The partnership licence will include a variety of benefits for both Lotus and Proton involving technology transfer, marketing rights and employment opportunities, both within the national F1 Team, at the team's technical centre in Sepang and its satellite base in Norfolk, United Kingdom, it said.

1MF1T is a privately-funded project and jointly owned by Tune Group, Naza Group and Litespeed UK.

Tune Group is jointly-owned by 1MF1T Team Principal Datuk Seri Tony Fernandes and 1MF1T Director Datuk Kamarudin Meranun. Other Directors of 1MF1T are SM Nasarudin SM Nasimuddin, the Chief Executive Officer of Naza Group and Zahri Ismail of 1Malaysia F1 Sdn Bhd.

The government holds no equity in the project, either directly or indirectly, through any of the government-linked companies.

The team will collaborate with Universiti Teknologi Malaysia and Universiti Teknologi PETRONAS to help realise the aspiration of creating a growing class of high-technology and knowledge-intensive human capital for the country.

Composites Technology Research Malaysia (CTRM), a leading composites manufacturing expert, will also be part of the project, the team said.

Plans are in the advanced stage to develop the 1Malaysia F1 Team technical, research and development and manufacturing centre on a eight hectare site at the Sepang International Circuit.

Fernandes described the team as a lifetime achievement for all Malaysians.

"Other countries have been bidding hard for this spot but Malaysia, through our concerted effort and strength in the true spirit of 1Malaysia, managed to pull it through.

"This will be an excellent opportunity for Malaysian corporates to share this dream that has finally come through," he said.

Fernandes said the project would help Malaysia move up the value chain by emphasising on innovation and technology.

"Having been involved in Formula One, we are very excited at Malaysia owning a Formula One team and the amazing benefits it will bring the country," he added.

Fernandes also said the team was delighted to be partnering Proton in a way that allowed both to focus on its core businesses yet share the benefits of the collaboration in a mutually beneficial manner.

"I am equally pleased too that we are able to announce that every day we are deepening our relationships with CTRM and SIC, with UTM and UTP. It's an immense privilege to be working with institutions that have embraced the spirit of the Prime Minister's 1Malaysia vision," he said.

In short, Fernandes said the programme was specifically designed to strengthen Malaysia's industrial base, inspire students to focus on a wide variety of skills, boost the country's image as a tourist destination and provide a competitive advantage for the nation on the world stage.

Proton's Managing Director Datuk Syed Zainal Abidin Syed Mohamed Tahir said the company as very excited and supportive of the Malaysian initiative.

"Through the impending licencing arrangement between Lotus and the team, the brand association will be beneficial to both Lotus and Proton would definitely heighten global brand awareness," he said.

Similarly, Syed Zainal said the Proton Group also hopes to capitalise on this opportunity from a technical and engineering aspect.

"The exposure to be obtained from Formula 1 racing is invaluable, especially when Lotus is a renowned sports car manufacturer and a respectable engineering firm," he said.

The team will rapidly integrate a Malaysian technical and pit crew totalling some 200 people managed by one of Formula One's most respected and accomplished Technical Director, Mike Gascoyne.

The team has already recruited a core team of international experts with proven track records in the many and various engineering, design and manufacturing disciplines.

This is to ensure the 1Malaysia F1 team is of international standard, readiness and capable of competing with the world's greatest racing marquees on the world's most prestigious racing stage.

The 1Malaysia F1 Team project takes its name from the "1Malaysia - People First, Performance Now" policy mooted by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak earlier this year.

FIFA, Police To Clamp Down On Fake World Cup Tickets

JOHANNESBURG, Sept 25 (Bernama) -- FIFA is working with police globally to crack down on internet sales of fake tickets for next year's World Cup in South Africa, the governing body of world soccer said on Friday.

As the world's most-watched sporting event approaches, increasing numbers of illegal tickets are offered over the internet, according to Xinhua news agency.

"Many unauthorized operators are exploiting the popularity of the FIFA World Cup to lure unsuspecting fans across the world into purchasing illegitimate or unauthorized tickets and/or ticket-inclusive travel packages," it said.

A special team from FIFA's legal affairs department is working closely with international authorities in South Africa and other countries to monitor the internet and take action against such offers.

"FIFA and its ticket handling partner MATCH are warning consumers about any unauthorized ticket sales and the risk of purchasing fake tickets, which would result in the buyers not being able to access the stadium," FIFA said.

Official tickets would only be printed a few weeks before the tournament, it added.

Extracting Water From Moon Possible: Indian Scientist

NEW DELHI, Sept 25 (Bernama) -- Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) Chairman Madhavan Nair on Friday claimed that it is possible to extract water from the Moon just a few hours after it was confirmed that water was present on the lunar surface.

Offering a glimmer of hope to the scientific community that water found on the Moon could be used, Nair said: "It's possible to extract water from moon."

"Chandrayaan has confirmed the presence of water molecules on the Moon. We have found signature of water on the surface of the Moon. It is embedded on the surface of the Moon.

"The quantity is also much larger than what was expected. There is a variation in the content of water particles on the surface of the Moon, which reflects that it varies with temperature," said Nair, reported the Press Trust of India (PTI) on Friday.

The ISRO chief also said that India's Moon mission Chandrayaan- 1, which carried the probes that discovered water, was a "110 percent success".

"Earlier I said it has completed 95 percent of mission objectives. Today I say it has done 110 percent. This (discovery of water) was the main motive of the Chandrayaan mission. We as Indians can be really proud that our Chandrayaan made such a major contribution to the discovery of water on the moon," Nair added.

He also said that Chandrayaan-1's finding shattered the belief that "Moon was bone dry".

But Nair also said that the water on moon was not "in the form of sea or lake or puddle or drops. It is embedded on the surface in minerals and rocks".

Nair made the claim while addressing the media just a few hours after America space agency National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) confirmed the presence of water on the Moon and thanked ISRO for carrying its Moon Mineralogy Mapper (M3) onboard Chandrayaan-1.

ISRO's Moon mission Chandrayaan-1 was launched on Oct. 22, 2008, with 11 scientific instruments onboard but the mission had to be aborted on Aug. 30 after spacecraft lost radio contact with its control station on earth.

Earlier, M3 principal investigator Carle Pieters in a paper published in Science Express, in the Sept. 24 edition said that Chandrayaan-1 found evidence of water on moon.

NASA also said that discovery of water would be crucial for future manned space flights.

Nicol Advances To Women's World Open Quarter-Finals

KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 25 (Bernama) -- Malaysian squash queen and world number one Datuk Nicol David advanced to the quarter-finals of the 2009 Women's World Open (WWO) squash championship in Amsterdam Thursday.

According to the tournament's official website www.womensworldopen.com, Nicol took 23 minutes to beat unseeded Camile Serme of France in straight sets 11-3, 11-5 and 11-0.

Serme, 20, was the European Junior champion for three times.

Following the victory, Nicol will be meeting fifth seeded Jenny Duncalf of England in today's quarter-finals at the Frans Otten Stadion glass court at 9.15pm local time (3.15am Malaysian time).

Earlier, Duncalf defeated Engy Kheirallah of Egypt, also in straight sets, 11-9, 11-9, 11-9, in 52 minutes.
